History

Southern Hills Church of Christ began on September 23, 1997 when approximately 14 people gathered to discuss starting a new congregation in the Buda area.   This handful of Christians came from other churches in the Austin Area (e.g., Western Hills, Westover Hills, and Buda/Kyle).

Another meeting was held on October 7, 1997.  The purpose of the meeting was to search for a meeting place and to set a date for the first worship service.  A search throughout the community was held with little success; however, the small group of Christians pushed forward and set a date of November 16, 1997, as their first worship service.  During this time the first committees at Southern Hills were formed (worship and education).  The group also decided that a name was needed.  It was decided that they needed a name that could be moveable and not tied to a street or a town because no permanent meeting place had been secured.  After a little brainstorming, they came up with the idea of "Southern Hills."  The group selected this name because it was to serve the South Austin and Buda/Kyle area and is in an area of Texas called the Hill Country.

On October 21, 1997, the group met again and it was just a couple of weeks before the first service; a place of worship had not been located. Doubt and frustration was evident but as one of the members said, "we stood strong on that date." With faith in God to provide a place, plans continued, teaching materials bought, and prayers were offered.

On November 4, 1997, the group met,  just one week before the first service, God answered their prayers and the small group of Christians celebrated with the news that that they had found a place to worship.  Hays Consolidated Independent School District had approved the use of the Buda Primary School Cafeteria.

On November 15, 1997, the group met in the cafeteria and setup the cafeteria and held its first worship service as Southern Hills Church of Christ.

In 1998, Randy Consford was hired as a part-time minister.  In 1999, four elders were appointed.

During the four years at Buda Primary School, the church continued to grow which led to the decision to consider purchase some land or an existing building with land.  Several sites were visited but the church decided to buy 17 acres of land next to the Dalhstrom Middle School.

In 2004, a building was built and the church moved into it in the summer of 2004.

In 2005, Randy Consford was hired as the full-time minister.

On November 18, 2007, we celebrated our 10th anniversary.  The day was highlighted with over 200 in attendance.  Encore, Brentwood Christian School's High School Chorus made a presentation.  Our worship theme centered around the word's "Sacrifice, Dedication, and Commitment."  After worship we had dinner on the grounds under a tent and concluded the day with some congregational singing.

On June 1, 2008, we celebrated an exciting event.  Members of the Austin Deaf Church of Christ  joined with us and Southern Hills has begun a full-time deaf ministry.
